The inspiration for the residency emerged in part, from a series of projects artist Anne-Katrin Spiess created over the course of several years in remote sites across the United States called “Thinking Boxes.” Artists, creative thinkers and people from all walks of life experience the occasional need for a completely secluded space which allows for “doing nothing.” Thinking Boxes provide a passive, non-productive space, an anti-studio.

Residents are invited to spend time in the various Thinking Boxes on the land:  one for contemplating the horizon line, one for whispering secrets and one for writing.
