LOWELL CLARE, 2020

Residency 108 provided the time, space and materials to explore a new series of ephemeral monuments to the landscape that was. The land is in a constant state of becoming and these works speak directly to the process and moment of their making. They celebrate the property as it was from October 15 to November 15 2020. The arrangements were constructed from foraged florae. The resulting forms were dictated by the materials and capture the spirit of the site at a specific moment. The pieces are suspended in time and space, they are neither alive nor dead; they are infused with water, producing an illusion of life. Elevating these curated masses speaks ontologically to their formal and conceptual construction. Suspending the work also allows them to be photographed with minimal context, and notably without a pedestal. These humble materials (grasses, leaves, and invasive species that mark disturbance on the land), have become reconstructed landscapes, maps, portraits, odes and objects in their own right.
